Cricket Formats and Tournaments — where to bet

T20 is the most popular format among cricket fans in Bangladesh. In short matches the result can shift every over, so betting markets stay more active. BPL (Bangladesh Premier League) and IPL are both T20 tournaments, and these two competitions get the most attention among Bangladeshi viewers.

ODI, or One Day International, has 50 overs of play, so markets keep changing throughout the match. Interest in ODI betting picks up notably when Bangladesh Tigers play in ICC tournaments. Test cricket is the longest format — five days of play involving wickets, runs and weather make the markets quite complex.

The T20 World Cup is one of the big events of the year, featuring Bangladesh alongside the best teams in the world. International and Test matches are also held in Sylhet outside Dhaka — you can bet on those matches at citinow as well.

Betting on Football and Other Sports

Alongside cricket, you can also bet on football at citinow. Football matches generally have three outcomes — home team win, away team win or draw — so the markets differ from cricket. In cricket a draw is usually only possible in Test; T20 or ODI matches almost always end with one team winning or a tie. This difference is reflected in the type of markets and the odds as well.

Popular Betting Markets — what types of bets can you place in cricket

Cricket has many different types of betting markets. Below is a brief introduction to seven popular markets — each explained with a simple example:

Match Winner

Match winning team

The market for which of two teams will win. Example: Team A vs Team B — if you think Team B will win, you bet on Team B. If Team B wins at the end of the match, your bet is successful.

Toss

Toss winning team

This market for which team will win the toss is simple but entirely luck-based. Example: if you think Team A will win the toss, you bet on Team A.

Top Batsman

Highest run-scoring batter

Which batter will score the most runs in an innings or across the whole match. Example: bet on the batter from Team A who you think will score the most runs — if that batter is the top scorer, you win.

Over/Under

Total runs over/under

Whether the total runs in a match will be above or below a set number — this market is known as "over/under". Example: if the line is set at 150 runs, choosing over means the total runs must be more than 150.

Multi Bet

Multiple bets combined

You can combine results from multiple matches on one slip to create a larger bet. If all selections are correct the return is much higher, but if even one is wrong you lose the entire bet. Learn more about citinow multi bet.

First Wicket

When the first wicket will fall

At how many runs or after how many overs the first wicket will fall — this market is also available live after the match starts. Example: if you think the opening wicket will fall before 30 runs, bet accordingly.

Handicap and Spread Markets

In handicap betting, one team is given a virtual advantage or disadvantage to even out the contest. For example, if Team A is given a −1.5 run handicap, Team A will need to win by more than two runs in the result — the correct outcome is understood by reading the situation rather than working through a numerical example.

Learning to read and understand odds — three formats

Odds are written in three different formats — decimal, fractional and American. citinow generally uses the decimal format, but knowing the difference between all three helps you work easily on any betting site.

Format Team A (example) What it means
Decimal 2.25 A total return of ৳2.25 for every ৳1 staked
Fractional 5/4 Profit of ৳5 for every ৳4 staked
American +125 ৳125 profit on a ৳100 bet

Example 1 — Team A to win (৳1,000 bet)

Odds for Team A to win: decimal 2.25 = fractional 5/4 = American +125. Placing a ৳1,000 bet and Team A wins gives a total return of ৳2,250 — that is ৳1,250 profit plus the original ৳1,000 stake together. If Team A loses, the ৳1,000 is gone.

Example 2 — Favourite Team B (৳1,000 bet)

If Team B is the favourite the odds are decimal 1.80 = fractional 4/5 = American -125 (American minus odds means how much you need to stake to win 100 in profit). With a ৳1,000 bet, if Team B wins the return is ৳1,800 — profit of ৳800.

An easy way to remember

  • Decimal odds are the simplest — multiply your stake by the odds to get your total return
  • The higher the odds, the higher the potential return — but the chance of winning is generally lower as well
  • American minus (−) odds mean favourite; plus (+) odds mean underdog
  • Before placing a bet, look at all three formats together — it makes it easier to avoid confusion

Live In-Play Betting — odds change as the match goes on

In-play betting is one of the most engaging aspects of cricket. You can still place bets after the match has started — odds keep changing with every ball, every wicket and every over.

For example, if five wickets fall in the first five overs, the odds for the batting team rise quickly because their chance of winning has dropped. Conversely, if a batter is in good form, their team's odds come down.

To do in-play betting well you need a good understanding of the match situation — ball speed, pitch conditions, which batters and bowlers are on the field all need to be considered. However this is purely for entertainment — there is no guarantee of any particular outcome or profit.

In Test cricket, in-play markets run across five days. In T20 everything wraps up in a few hours, so odds change much faster.

Some practical tips for betting

Cricket betting is a form of entertainment — but keeping a few things in mind makes the experience better. Here are some tips:

  • Set a budget first: Decide how much you will bet in each session before you start. If you lose, do not go beyond that limit.
  • Understand one match well: Instead of betting on many matches at once, try to understand the markets of one match properly.
  • Choose markets to suit the format: In T20, top batsman or over/under markets work well. In Test, innings winner or match draw markets are also available.
  • Betting is entertainment, not investment: Cricket betting is entirely for entertainment. Every bet carries the possibility of loss.
  • Play responsibly: Before placing a bet, read the responsible gaming guide. Applicable for ages 21+.

A quick note on multi bet

Betting on multiple matches combined on one slip is called a multi bet — if all selections are correct you get a larger return at once. But one wrong selection means losing the entire bet. Find out the rules and examples for citinow multi bet in detail.

Betting is for persons aged 21+ only. Play responsibly.

Cricket Betting FAQs

T20 matches finish in two to three hours, so odds in live markets change quickly and there are more betting opportunities. ODI gives you 50 overs, so you have more time in the market. In Test cricket, five days of play means you can find draw, innings margin and session-based markets — this format offers more room for analysis.

In BPL, match winner, toss, top batsman and total runs over/under are the most popular markets. Live betting also has markets for wicket fall and run predictions after the powerplay. You can also use the multi bet option to combine several matches in one slip.

Yes, in-play betting continues after the match starts. Odds update after every over, wicket and powerplay. In in-play you need to decide quickly, as markets can change within seconds.

In handicap betting, the weaker team is given a virtual run advantage to make the contest feel even. Example: if the stronger team is given a −30 run handicap, their actual winning margin needs to be more than 30 runs. In handicap markets it is better to read the situation rather than focus on specific numbers.

Football typically has three outcomes: home win, away win and draw. In cricket, T20 or ODI usually has two outcomes (one team wins), though a draw is possible in Test. This is why the average odds value differs between the two sports. Football has markets based on number of goals; cricket has more markets around runs and wickets.
